Ultra Cool

Here is our first baby picture for Boy Basham. You can make out his head on the right complete with nose and mouth. His torso and legs are also visible. He is in Week 21 now and has grown to about the length and weight of a large banana.

Of course, one cannot think of bananas without conjuring thoughts of two things: 1) "peanut butter jelly time" dancing and 2) Harry Belafonte's classic "Banana Boat Song" with it's catchy "Day O" lyrical hook. PB and J Time is my dance of choice to express joy of WKU Hilltopper success on my hoops blog. Belafonte's classic tune chronicles the plight of banana workers in the Caribbean. So, this week, the child shall be called "Bela" Basham. This way, it's a reference to two great musicians in Harry Belafonte and legendary banjo player, Bela Fleck. Oh, and it is a nod to an annoying, dancing, digitized banana.

This Labor Day marked the biggest 5K race of the year for me. The Run for Sight 5K is a fundraiser to supply lenses to needy folks in Warren Co. I set a personal record this morning by finishing the 5K (3.1 miles) in 18.20. Laurie was kind enough to take a pic of my finish and one of me and my pastor, Ron, after the race (see below). We had a great day in Breck Co. with the Bashams after the race highlighted by tasty grilled food courtesy of Monte and a tremendous Pea-Pickin' Cake prepared by Audrey. Good times were had with Monte, Audrey, Uncle Dooney (Neal), Nikki, both Mamaws (Basham and Preston), and Papaw Basham.

Hope everyone's Labor Day was as good as ours.

Cort finishes.

Cort and Ron.

Great ultrasound pic! He's a handsome little feller.

Cort, congrats too on the good run. 18.20... that's like 15 mph, right?! Imagine how fast you could run if you didn't have all that hair robbing you of your protein. :)

No kidding! :) I adhere to the Samson theory: longer locks=more strength. That's why Crystal Gale could bench press 685 lbs with her tiny, wren-like frame back in the day.

I am eating 15 eggs per day just to be on the safe side. :)

Belafonte Says Bush Is 'Greatest Terrorist in the World,' Praises Venezuelan Dictator

Sunday , January 08, 2006

CARACAS, Venezuela — The American singer and activist Harry Belafonte called President Bush "the greatest terrorist in the world" on Sunday and said millions of Americans support the socialist revolution of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

Belafonte led a delegation of Americans including the actor Danny Glover and the Princeton University scholar Cornel West that met the Venezuelan president for more than six hours late Saturday. Some in the group attended Chavez's television and radio broadcast Sunday.

"No matter what the greatest tyrant in the world, the greatest terrorist in the world, George W. Bush says, we're here to tell you: Not hundreds, not thousands, but millions of the American people ... support your revolution," Belafonte told Chavez during the broadcast.

The 78-year-old Belafonte, famous for his calypso-inspired music, including the "Day-O" song, was a close collaborator of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and is now a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. He also has been outspoken in criticizing the U.S. embargo of Cuba.

Chavez said he believes deeply in the struggle for justice by blacks, both in the U.S. and Venezuela.

"Although we may not believe it, there continues to be great discrimination here against black people," Chavez said, urging his government to redouble its efforts to prevent discrimination.

Belafonte accused U.S. news media of falsely painting Chavez as a "dictator," when in fact, he said, there is democracy and citizens are "optimistic about their future."

Dolores Huerta, a pioneer of the United Farm Workers labor union also in the delegation, called the visit a "very deep experience."

Chavez accuses Bush of trying to overthrow him, pointing to intelligence documents released by the U.S. indicating that the CIA knew beforehand that dissident officers planned a short-lived 2002 coup. The U.S. denies involvement, but Chavez says Venezuela must be on guard.

Belafonte suggested setting up a youth exchange for Venezuelans and Americans. He finished by shouting in Spanish: "Viva la revolucion!"

Cav,

If you read the rest of this blog, you will realize that ALL of these name suggestions are meant to be humorous. We don't plan on naming our son "Bela." We certainly would not name him after He-Man, either.

My comments were related to Belafonte's MUSIC. Nothing more.
